Mihir Garh Palace, Jodhpur

Named as the “World’s Most Extraordinary Hotel”, by some of the renowned travel guides the Mihir Garh Palace is perched on a sand dune, overlooking the shrubs of the Thar desert. The name means the fort of the sun, and the palace was made by Sidharth Singh, who says he was driven by intuition rather than reason. He hired more than 100 local craftsmen and carpenters who worked for two years to create nine 1,700sq ft suites, each with its own plunge pool, fireplace (made in the local style, from cow dung) and decorated in furnishings from Jodhpur.
Wildflower Hall, Mashobra

Wildflower Hall is the Oberoi Group’s step to revive the experience of staying among the pines and cedars of Mashobra. The resort was built by Ranjit Sabikhi, of Ranjit Sabikhi Associates, the New Delhi architect who designed the Indian Embassy in Kuwait, the Taj Bengal hotel in Calcutta and the Mughal Sheraton in Agra. The hotel is wrapped with views of the Himalayas that give most of the people Jelly Knees. The interiors are done by Chandu Chhada, of Chhada, Siembieda Associates in Hong Kong. Tufted sofas, marquetry tables and upholstered lounge chairs with honey-colored beech-wood frames take you to the colonial era.
Taj Lake Palace, Udaipur

Known as one of the world’s most romantic hotels, the Taj Lake Palace floats on the waters of Lake Pichola, with 360-degree views of Udaipur. Expertly managed and staffed by the Taj group, the service is flawless, cuisine standards are high, and the overall experience unforgettable. It was built in 1743 as a summer escape and pleasure resort by the royal dynasty of Mewar, and was converted into a hotel when the Maharana started accepting paying guests in the 1960s. The original fountains and fretwork expanded to include 66 luxury rooms. The hotel was a key location in the Bond film, Octopussy.
