Imagine the wide expanse of pristine white land and above, clear blue sky stretching till the horizon- the imaginations and pictures can never do justice to how enchantingly beautiful Kutch actually is!

It makes us realize that even the simplest of thing can be so bewitchingly beautiful! Also, now imagine the entire white background, quirked up with people wearing vibrant hued clothes. This dreamy and captivating scenic beauty is the reason why thousands of people visit the magnanimity of the Rann of Kutch every year.

Rann of Kutch highlighted on the map of Gujarat (India)

The Rann of Kutch is located in the Thar Desert bio-geographic area in the Indian state of Gujarat with some parts in Pakistani province of Sindh. It is a seasonally marshy region, the word Rann meaning “salt marsh”, alternating with medaks, elevated pieces of land where vegetation grows.

Kutch is the name of the district in Gujarat where this region is situated. The marsh covers a huge area of around 10,000 square miles and is positioned between the Gulf of Kutch and the mouth of the Indus River in southern Pakistan. To the northeast corner of the Rann of Kutch lies the Luni River, originating in Rajasthan.

This area in India is one of the very few places with extreme variation in temperatures. It turns to be one of the hottest areas of India during summers averaging and peaking at 49.5 °C and similarly during the winters, the temperature dramatically reduces and goes below 0 °C.

Rann Utsav

The beauty of the Rann of Kutch during the Rann festival is perfectly summed up the Indian celebrity Shri Amitabh Bachchan in the ‘Khushboo Gujarat Ki’ campaign. He is also the brand ambassador of Gujarat Tourism.

He said that “why people go to the moon when they can see moon here on earth in Kutch during full moon” in The Rann Utsav. Imagine the beauty when the moonlight illuminates up this entire marshy plain, it would seem so majestic, peaceful and realistic that you would feel that you are on the moon itself!

Rann of Kutch is a great sight when the people of Rajasthan and people from all over the globe come together and rejoice in the spirit of one of the most picturesque festival – the Rann Utsav (the Rann festival)!

The Rann festival is a three-month-long celebration and the charm of these salt marshes are at their peak at this point of time. The festival is celebrated with great joy every year between the periods of December to January thereby making it an ideal time to visit. You can stay up hours, lying down under the blanket of millions of stars in the clear sky – far away from your hectic city life and can never get enough of that view.
