The name means the fort of the sun, and the palace was made by Sidharth Singh, who says he was driven by intuition rather than reason. The resort was built by Ranjit Sabikhi, of Ranjit Sabikhi Associates, the New Delhi architect who designed the Indian Embassy in Kuwait, the Taj Bengal hotel in Calcutta and the Mughal Sheraton in Agra. The hotel is wrapped with views of the Himalayas that give most of the people Jelly Knees. The interiors are done by Chandu Chhada, of Chhada, Siembieda Associates in Hong Kong. It was built in 1743 as a summer escape and pleasure resort by the royal dynasty of Mewar, and was converted into a hotel when the Maharana started accepting paying guests in the 1960s.
